Hospitality programme combines both academic and pratical skills

It has been said many times “there is no substitute for experience”. In the hospitality industry it can be said “there is no JOB without experience”.

The hospitality industry is quite unique in that, in the past, many of the higher management staff never completed any formal education and rose to the top through hard work and many small promotions during a long career. Times have changed somewhat and now a formal qualification in hospitality management is becoming mandatory for staff wanting to enter lower management jobs in the hospitality industry. The problem is that higher management wants not only theoretical knowledge, but practical experience as well. That is how the AEC Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management is meeting the needs of the industry.

After completing three terms of theoretical and practical study, students are then placed in a venue for their training attachment. The student completes a six month attachment during which they refine the practical skills needed in the industry and also get an opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into “real world” practice. The six month training attachment is a vital part of the student’s education and preparation, and is a stepping stone for a bright future in the hospitality industry. Not only do students gain the knowledge and skills necessary but they also begin to build their network of contacts which is invaluable for their future career.

The hospitality industry is very dynamic and constantly innovating to meet the needs of consumers. This means that as educators we also need to update our products to meet these changing needs. The AEC Diploma of Hospitality Management is an innovative mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that provides students with the tools to build a successful career in the hospitality field.
