Programme Description

This is a multi-disciplinary area which includes subjects such as consumer behaviour, management and human resource management. The programme is intensive and is designed to offer a general business education.


Programme Aims

  • provide students with high quality teaching and learning experiences that are relevant to business and management careers
  • develop subject specific knowledge and understanding appropriate to business and management careers, including consumer behaviour, human resource management and marketing.
  • develop the capacity for critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis, through the application of knowledge to a wide range of situations
  • encourage creativity and develop appropriate research, communication and quantitative skills
  • prepare students for a career in business and management and progression to further study
  • develop ability to become autonomous learners and to reflect upon personal skill development, thus encouraging life-long learning

Entry Requirements

  • 2 GCE ‘A’ levels or equivalent
  • English Language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5
  • At least 17 years of age


Entry Requirements

A recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent;

or

A recognised diploma + 5 years of working experience.

and

English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5.

Applicants may also be required to attend an interview.

Programme Outline

  • Business Finance (20 credit points)
    The aim of financial managers is to maximize the market value of a firm’s share. This course offers an introduction to the fundamental concepts and tools of financial management. Students will learn about the techniques used by financial managers to make decisions that will increase the firm’s market value. This course covers concepts and tools such as the valuation of future cash flows, the valuation of shares and bonds, capital budgeting, capital structure, risk and returns, dividends and financing.
  • Consumer Behaviour (20 credit points)
    Knowing why and how consumers behave will help marketers formulate successful marketing campaigns. Thus, the study of consumer behaviour is about understanding the psychological and sociological aspects of consumers' search and choice processes. This course covers the environmental influences, individual differences and psychological processes which influence the consumer decision processes. Students also learn how to analyse consumer trends using various tools.
  • Data Analysis (20 credit points)
    Statistics has an important role in business. It can be used to assess consumer trends, staff satisfaction and productivity, among other things. This course provides an understanding of basic statistical concepts. Student will receive practice on the basic methods and skills necessary to collect, appraise, present, analyse and interpret data. Students will learn about descriptive and inferential statistics. The course also incorporates training on common statistical software.
  • Human Resource Management (20 credit points)
    Managers must know the strategies for managing people in the workplace. This introductory course offers an overview of the key functions of human resource management such as recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, industrial relations, compensation and benefits, etc. Students will also acquire practical skills such as preparing a company training plan and conducting recruitment interviews.
  • Management (20 credit points)
    Most of the goods and services which human beings require to meet our needs and wants are delivered by organisations. So what exactly is an organization? How is it managed? This course provides students with an understanding of the complex nature and operation of organisations and their dynamic environments. In this course, students will learn about the key management functions of planning, leading, organising, decision-making and controlling. Students are also exposed to issues such as corporate social responsibility and ethics.
  • Marketing (20 credits)
    Marketing is a core function of organisations which rely on customers for revenue. This course introduces the students to the theories and principles of marketing required for effective business operation. Students will learn about product, price, promotion and placement strategies. The emphasis of the course is on identifying the needs of target markets, appreciating the buying behaviour, and developing a suitable marketing mix to satisfy the needs and wants of the target markets.
